With the drought conditions, Weiss Lake is down below the normal level for this time of the year. Levels will continue to drop until rain improves conditions. People with boats, other water related equipment, and facilities should be alert to changing conditions on and below Alabama Power lakes, and take the necessary steps to protect their property. The GPS coordinates for these reefs are available to the public, free, on my website www.markcollinsguideservice.com and at https://apcshorelines.com/our lakes/weiss/
Or contact WLIA at http://weisslakeimprovementassociation.org/
Please join the Weiss Lake Improvement Association for a 10 dollar donation to help support Weiss Lake. Joining also includes a badge to the spring CRAPPIE RODEO, with cash prizes totaling over ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS! For the spring of 2017 February 15 thru April 30th.
The cooler nights the past week cooled the water a little and put some oxygen back in the lake. Some bass have moved shallow and the crappie are starting to bite better. Look for the fishing to start getting really good again with the first cool front in September.
Bass fishing is fair and some fish have moved shallower, a lot of bass are still on deeper cover, under deeper docks and on the creek and river channel ledges, humps and submerged road beds. They are being caught on medium to deep running crank baits, 1/2 ounce spinner baits, Carolina rigged plastics, and jigs. There are 20 plus pound stringers winning the tournaments all year, The Bass fishing on Weiss Lake, rivals Lake Guntersville for the last 2 years.
Striper fishing is fair and they are being caught in the lower Chattooga River, at the Cave Hole in Little River and Little Spring Creek, down lining and flat lining live shad 8 to 10 feet deep in the river channel.
Crappie fishing is good and most fish are on the main Coosa river channel ledges and Little River, in 12 to 16 feet of water on cover, and they can be caught spider rigging with live minnows, fished 2 to 4 feet above the bottom. Some fish are being caught under docks in the main lake, shooting jigs, a 1/24 ounce Jiffy Jig in colors JJ13 and JJ17 is working great.
